Seen from the base or the top of its mountains, Schönau is always a place of beauty.
The scenery around Lake Königssee in the heart of the National Park is known around the world. Steep cliffs, a Fjord-like lake and the deep forests of the Berchtesgaden National Park form a picturesque setting. The boat ride to the world-famous Chapel of St. Bartholomew is highlighted by the echoed strains of a Flugelhorn.
The Jenner cable car speeds visitors to the summit from which Königssee and the alpine panorama can be viewed. In summer the Jenner is tops for hiking and in winter perfect for ski sports with a variety of runs - some for experts - that have been popular for decades. Today snow-blowing equipment ensures good snow conditions.
Bordering the lake is the artificially refrigerated bobsled and luge track where contestants compete at breakneck speeds. Home track to Olympics champion Georg Hackl, the Königssee ice track is also a venue for World Championships.
The beautiful walking trails are not only popular for viewing the spectacular scenery but can be used for medically supervised therapeutic walks. Cure-takers also appreciate its Kneipp cold water pool, brine inhalation gazebo and its heated outdoor pool - all in an alpine setting.
With so much to offer, Schönau is truly "fit for a king".
